Bright lights on a summer's night

Scientific name: Lampyris noctiluca

Observation period: June to August

Way of life:

The small, inconspicuous beetles are usually only spotted when they start shining their glowing, greenish lights in the early evening. They mostly eat small snails.

Habitat:

Can be found in Vienna’s forest clearings, lush creek or field margins and ditches, in gardens, parks, fields, and in areas with mostly single-family homes

Did you know?

Glow-worms are some of the few insect species that can produce a shimmering light. This is how they find their mates during warm summer nights. By creating thick undergrowth under shrubs, we can create a habitat for them.
