European orchard bee
Peaceful juggernaut at the nesting aids
Scientific name: Osmia cornuta
Observation period: March to May
Way of life:
The adult bees appear in early spring and like to feed from the early blooms, such as goat willows and the viburnum farreri. Even this early in the year, they carry the pollen to their nests to store food for their future offspring.
Habitat:
Can be found all over Vienna, especially in the inner city; and in gardens or on balconies if food supply through flowers and nesting opportunities are provided
Did you know?
The females have two tiny horns on their foreheads, hidden between the hairs. Unlike the honeybees, these bees do not live in colonies. Each bee keeps to itself. They build their nests in all types of hollow spaces.
