Italian tree cricket
Nightly tunes
Scientific name: Oecanthus pellucens
Observation period: July to October
Way of life:
The slim whiteish cricket is hard to spot as it prefers to hide under leaves and in shrubs and trees. They reach their full growth in July and their songs can be heard on warm summer nights and long into autumn.
Habitat:
In Vienna, the Italian tree cricket lives in shrubberies and on climbing plants in gardens and parks, on forest clearings and in fields, in vineyards and areas with single-family homes, but also in court yards in the inner city.
Did you know?
You've probably heard the soft song of the cricket before, which it produces on warm nights by clapping its wings while hiding in the shrubs.
